It Feels Like Home

I'm not sure if it applies to most people as well, but though I've been to a dozen cafés, there's still one that will always remain special. In my case, it's Myrna's Bakehouse. It's pretty known here in Zamboanga because it's been around for quite a long time. Because of that, it's a go-to place for most people when it comes to snack time or when there's a special occasion.

This afternoon, Mom had this craving for sweets, so I tagged along. I'm not supposed to be eating sweets because I'm sick, but it's kinda difficult for me to say no to food under normal circumstances. (I'm sure most of my readers, friends and family already know that by now.)

Even if visiting Myrna's was her idea in the first place, Mom felt guilty about all the sugar that we were about to feast upon. She decided to go for an espresso-based drink instead of any of the sweet ones that the bakehouse offered. As for me, I went for a long-time favorite of mine. It's called Chocomallow Mars. I have always loved having marshmallows on my hot chocolate. The drink was served with some brown sugar, but I didn't need to add any since the creamy topping and the chocolate itself was already sweet.

Mom ordered her favorite pudding and of course, the ever-present buko pie. Myrna's version would have to be my second favorite here in Zamboanga. Antonio's will always top my list. Though it has a very tasty crust, a meringue topping and a creamy filling, it still cannot compete with my favorite. :) My cough was acting up again though, so Mom was made to finish most of the sweet treats.

What made me really full was the ham and bacon panini. I have yet to taste a panini that's as good as that of Myrna's. Though it's a bit pricey, it's worth it. I just cannot explain how crispy and buttery it is. It also really goes well with the potato chips that they serve them with. I wasn't even hungry because I had a heavy lunch, so it amazed me when I was able to finish the whole thing in one sitting.

It was really nice to go back to Myrna's. I've had a lot of good times there with a number of people. In a way, it felt like going home somehow - the familiarity of the place and the taste of the food I've loved since I can't remember. Even if I'll discover more places to eat in, I will always make sure to return to Myrna's whenever I can.

How about you? Do you have a favorite restaurant/café that makes you feel the same way?

  1. All of us have this place that we can call our 2nd home. In your case, its a a bakehouse. Nice choice though, pretty cool and relaxing place and ambience Mryna's Bakehouse have.

  2. The place looks nice and maybe a cheaper alternative for coffee breaks rather than going to Starbucks.

  3. I find solace too in cafes like this. A cafe/bakehouse that sit you comfortably will definitely make you feel like it's your 2nd home. :)

  4. It's been ages since I've been to my favorite coffeeshop! Blame it on motherhood. Haha! But Myrna's looks like a really cozy place to hang out. It's cute that you and your mom bond together over food! :-)

  5. There used to be plenty of places here in Baguio. As the years went by, though, they would either be gone (but not forgotten) or managed by heirs who fail to capture the original products. I miss those places. There is one restaurant here (which was here way back in the 50s pa) which was bought by McDo.

    1. We experience that here as well. It's frustrating when good food places close down. :|

  6. I used to have special places but not really anymore. There is a tea shop in town that I like but the food is just okay. This sounds exquisite. ;-)
    Feel better soon.

  7. I don't know if it is just me but every restaurant, as long as they serve delicious kare kare, is a home for me. But nothing compares to my mom's cooking.

  13. Looks yummy. Well, my favorite bakeshop and resto is in the next city. The waiters know us by name because we are addicted to the place. That's how we eat, we always go to the same place and stick to it, we try out new ones once in a while but they have to impress us for us to return.

  20. I'll forever love Chocolate Kiss maybe because we've been frequenting the place and the friendly staff adds to the over all charm aside from the food they offer.
